Highway 76 just north of Houston had to be closed for several hours May 6 after a trailer spilled as much as 450 gallons of liquid fertilizer on the roadway, officials said
A pickup truck hauling the 500-gallon fiberglass trailer was on a bridge about 3 miles north of Houston when the tank ruptured about 10:30 a.m. due to shifting weight on the bumpy road, Houston County Emergency Management Services Kurt Kuhlers said.
No one was injured in the spill.
“We spread a thick layer of sand to absorb the fertilizer, and it’s being stockpiled for later disposal,” Kuhlers said.
Houston County Emergency Services was assisted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Houston County Highway Department and the Minnesota State Patrol. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency also were consulted.
The accident is under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol.
